Tamanu oil is a natural extract that is making quite a buzz in the media recently. The oil is extracted from an native tree of South East Asia and the South Pacific and has been used for centuries as effective aid for human skin. The Story of Tamanu Oil
Centuries ago, the Polynesians had to find ways to improve and preserve their health by finding and using the benefits they discovered in their natural pharmacy, native plants and herbs. They had no doctors or pharmacies in those times and were forced to find and test the plants they found growing on the islands. One of their most urgent needs was to find a way to protect and heal their skin as the salt-laden winds, the high ambient temperature, and injuries damaged their skin. Until they found the right plants and learned to process them and find a potential remedy, it was difficult or impossible to treat skin problems.
Then they found the Tamanu tree, its fruits and nuts and discovered a way to make use of this miraculous tree as their sacred skin care aid. They were also surely attracted to the beautiful and fragrant little flowers that grow on the trees. When they mature, the flowers are replaced by small, round green fruits, about an inch in diameter. There is usually a single fruit per stem. As they ripen, the fruits turn from green to yellow. The green and yellow fruits then turn brown, wrinkles and hardens. The fruits are picked easily, or are left to mature on the trees to later fall to the ground as brown, wrinkled fruits. Small brown fruits often litter the ground around the trees. When the natives opened the brown fruits, they found a single whitish/yellow kernel of a nut.
They may have tried to eat the nut, but found it to be less than tasty. Then some native traditional healer found a way to dry the nuts in the sun, sometimes as long as 1 to 2 months in the sun was needed. Then the kernels shrank and once dry, the natives then ground them between rocks and found that they could squeeze out a few drops of oil per kernel of a dark, greenish oil that had a distinctive nutty aroma. Perhaps the same traditional healer then tried the oil on his or her skin and voila, they had discovered the finest natural skin moisturizer on the planet. Many Polynesians use Tamanu Oil on their bodies, faces and hair everyday. These beauties are wrinkle-free and preserve their beauty for many years past their middle-age.

• Wash the affected skin areas carefully, preferably with Island Trend’s Tamanu Oil Soap, rinse in lukewarm water and pat dry.

Ways to fix very dry feet
• A tool like this personal exfoliating stone file, will help you remove old, dead and flaky skin from your soles, heels and toes. The concave surface of the file helps remove dead skin on rounded portions of heels and toes. Don’t overdo using the file (you should not feel any pain during its use), but concentrate on the obviously old, dry skin surfaces, making smooth passes, while exerting light pressure on the file. I soon saw the reruns of the show and smiled that the “new” oil finally had a huge audience. I smiled because I have known about the oil, studied it in detail, watched Tamanu trees grow, flower and bear fruit and learned of the harvest and processing of the kernel from which the oil is cold-pressed. All of this while we lived in Hawaii where the Kamani tree (their name for tamanu tree), grew in many areas of Oahu. Later I became an avid user and marketer of the oil and have found unique ways to use the product for nearly 15 years.
Tamanu is anything but new to Polynesians. They were the discoverers of the tree and the many benefits of the oil, protecting the trees as an extremely valuable aids for healthy skin-care. Just imagine, it has been known and used by Polynesians for over 2000 years!
When the French took over Tahiti in 1850, they soon learned of many natural plants that were known to the natives as sacred healing plants they used to treat many maladies. Among them was Tamanu Oil. French scientists studied the oil for years and many French cosmetics makers included it in their cosmetics. Strangely, however, word of the oil’s benefits were very slow to reach US shores.
Before our Hawaiian adventure, however, my son introduced me to the oil that he had obtained from a friend from Tahiti. I had complained to my son about my serious case of rosacea, a skin disease for which I tried many prescription drugs, creams and lotions–all to no avail. Although I had the oil in the medicine cabinet for months, I did not believe it would help my rosacea and didn’t try it right away. Not smart.

It was not until we learned that a Tahitian company was making and selling a lye-based tamanu oil soap, that we adopted the idea of making soap ourselves, but using more natural, vegetal-based clear glycerin soap base. Soon we learned to make and sold our own brand of soaps to other companies through whose web sites we sold the new soap products. Everyone who tried the soaps loved them. Re-orders were commonplace.

Luçie Poehere Wilson, our granddaughter, has been using Tahitian tamanu oil for the last 10 years for her complexion and to treat burns and scars.
